Decades of Experience

From humble beginnings, British Spirals & Castings is now the largest manufacturer of bespoke spiral staircases, straight staircases, and balconies, here’s how we did it.

It all started with a need for a spiral staircase in a barn conversion. When he couldn’t find the perfect design, he took matters into his own hands. He designed and commissioned the staircase at a local foundry, creating a piece that impressed everyone who saw it.
The demand for the unique staircase designs quickly grew, inspiring him to establish Cottage Craft Spirals. When our MD Richard brought the business in 1992 it was working out of a garden shed with 1 employee, only the Victorian design and just 5 diameter spiral treads. He moved premises to our current site in Chapel-en-le-Frith and orders soon started coming in from across the country and further afield.
To meet the needs of a discerning clientele, Richard founded Tilley’s London Castings. This division focused on producing high-quality London-style cast stairs, railings, and gates, along with restoring stair balustrades from a London showroom.
In 2009, Richard acquired Milton Aluminium Castings, a foundry in the West Midlands. This move ensured that all products remained British-made and quality-controlled from start to finish, maintaining the highest standards in craftsmanship.
In 2014, Richard consolidated the three trading divisions into one brand: British Spirals & Castings. Today, as a family-run business with Richard’s son Ben in the management team, we have become Europe’s largest manufacturer of bespoke spiral staircases, straight staircases, and balconies. Our commitment to quality is backed by CE accreditation, a testament to our dedication to excellence in manufacturing.
