Converting or refurbishing an existing property can be a complex process, especially when adding a new staircase or balcony. One of the most common challenges we encounter is that walls are often not perfectly square or plumb, making accurate measurements difficult and time-consuming. To address this, we use a LiDAR camera on particularly challenging projects, allowing us to create a highly precise 3D render of your space.
The Benefits of Laser Scanning
We manufacture staircases and balconies for projects worldwide, and we’re proud to support our customers by helping them take accurate measurements, ensuring a perfect fit without needing a site visit. For most projects, a tape measure and level are sufficient to provide the measurements we need. However, when working in especially large or tall spaces, or in older buildings where walls and floors may be uneven, the LiDAR camera provides a superior solution.
The LiDAR camera functions like radar, firing a signal and measuring how long it takes to return. By repeating this process, it can accurately plot points in space. Unlike radar, which uses radio waves, LiDAR uses lasers, enabling it to generate an incredibly precise 3D ‘point cloud’ that can be imported into computer-aided design (CAD) software.
We use a Leica LiDAR camera, which not only creates this detailed point cloud but also takes regular photographs of the building. By positioning the camera at different points around the room (or the exterior, for outdoor staircases), we can generate a highly accurate digital recreation of the space. This process takes just a few hours, including image capture and processing in CAD software.
Precision Design and Visualisation
Once the images are processed, our team can easily adjust aspects of the staircase design, such as tread orientation, landing plate positioning, fixing locations, and the dimensions of openings in the upper floor or balcony. This also allows for better visualisation of the final staircase at the design stage. You’ll be able to see how different design elements – such as materials, spindle or tread patterns, handrail styles, and finishes – will look in your property.
The use of LiDAR ensures we can manufacture your staircase or balcony with the highest level of precision, even if the space is irregular or off square. This makes the installation process smoother, helping to avoid delays or unexpected issues. The LiDAR data can also be shared with your architect, assisting them in incorporating additional features into their designs.
