On the rugged northern coast of Scotland, a British Spirals & Castings solid ash staircase has provided a tranquil centre point for a cosy new home. Having carefully selected the beautiful location, Roy and Carol Champion wanted to create a home which would do justice to the natural splendour of the surrounding countryside.

It was in the design stage that the couple decided to include a spiral; staircase in the centre of the open plan living space to connect the ground floor to the vaulted first floor:

“We came across British Spirals & Castings whilst searching online and requested a brochure. It wasn’t the first brochure we requested to come in the post, but we were extremely impressed with what we saw. It just so happened that we were due to travel through Chapel en le Frifth and so we stopped by the showroom to talk to the owners. Once we saw the beauty and quality of the staircases in real life, nothing else would do. Richard and Antonia Harding were very helpful in working out the measurements and gave us a quote later that day.” Roy explained.

The Champions chose a classic solid timber ash staircase with turned balusters, newels, and centre pole bobbins, with a matching balustrade for the well opening on the landing. They also followed our suggestion to rotate the staircase from its original orientation in order to make the best use of the space.

However, as Richard Harding, our Managing Director, explained:

“This was a very interesting project as it required us to build the staircase at the same time the house was being built. We liaised closely with the house manufacturer and the builder to firstly ensure that the staircase fit the ceiling height, but also to clarify the positioning of the joists and other structural elements. As with 95% of our staircases, no site visit was required. The final installation went without an issue and the staircase stands as testament to our expertise and excellent customer service.”

“The staircase has completely transformed the room,” Roy concluded. “It is a piece of architectural beauty that everyone comments on.”
